Humana Medicare Supplement Plan G Review (2027)
Humana is one of several established insurance companies that sell Medicare Supplement Plan G.
Because Plan G is standardized, Humana's Plan G pays the same Medicare-approved costs as Plan G from any other company.
So the real question isn't whether Humana's coverage is good. It's whether Humana's premium, discounts, and pricing history beat the alternatives in your ZIP code.
Having run thousands of Plan G quotes for clients across the country, I've watched Humana go from a company I rarely quoted on price to one I now include in most Plan G comparisons.
We compared available Plan G quotes from Humana and five other insurance providers across 47 states. Humana returned quotes in 45 states, which form the basis of our pricing analysis.
Here's what those quotes show, and how I'd evaluate Humana for your situation.
Quick Answer
Humana Plan G is worth quoting, but not worth overpaying for.
In our quotes for a 65-year-old man, Humana was the lowest-priced Plan G among the carriers we compared in 6 of 45 states, and within $25 a month of the lowest in 17.
In about a third of states, it was more than $50 a month higher than the cheapest option for the same coverage.

Is Humana Plan G Worth Considering?
In most states, yes — it belongs on your comparison list. But because every company's Plan G pays the same share of the same Medicare-approved bills, a strong brand doesn't buy you better coverage.
The comparison comes down to four practical questions:
- What is Humana's premium in your ZIP code, after the discounts you actually qualify for?
- How have Humana's rates moved in your state over the past few years?
- Is the specific Humana policy series you'd buy still open to new enrollees?
- Would switching later be realistic if rates climb, given your health?
A big name doesn't answer any of those on its own. Large insurers can raise Medigap premiums sharply too, and a smaller carrier with a reasonable rate history can be a sound choice.
What Does Humana Plan G Cover?
Humana's Plan G covers the same standardized benefits as every other Plan G. Here's the short version.
| Medicare cost | Plan G pays? |
|---|---|
| Part A hospital deductible ($1,736 per benefit period in 2026) | Yes, 100% |
| Part A hospital coinsurance and hospice coinsurance | Yes, 100% |
| Skilled nursing facility coinsurance (days 21–100) | Yes, 100% |
| Part B 20% coinsurance | Yes, 100% |
| Part B excess charges | Yes, 100% |
| First 3 pints of blood | Yes, 100% |
| Foreign travel emergency care | 80% after a $250 deductible, up to a $50,000 lifetime limit |
| Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) | No — you pay this |
After you pay the Part B deductible, Plan G covers your remaining cost-sharing for Medicare-approved services.
It does not cover things Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as routine dental care, most routine vision and hearing care, or outpatient prescription drugs. You'll need a separate Part D plan for prescriptions.
One standardization exception: Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin use their own Medigap plan designs instead of the lettered plans. If you live in one of those states, you won't find a "Plan G" from Humana or anyone else.
How Much Does Humana Plan G Cost?
Humana's Plan G premium depends on your age, sex, ZIP code, tobacco use, and the discounts you qualify for.
To show where Humana really lands, our agency compared Plan G quotes from six insurance providers: Humana, HealthSpring (formerly Cigna), UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, and the local Blue Cross Blue Shield plan where one was available.
How we ran these quotes:
- Plan G, male, non-tobacco, ages 65, 70, and 75, before household discounts.
- One ZIP code per state. A single ZIP code can't represent every price in a state, so rates in your area may differ.
- 47 states quoted. Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin aren't included because they don't use the standard Plan G.
- Humana returned quotes in 45 states. It didn't return a Plan G quote for our Connecticut or Vermont ZIP codes, so those states aren't in the Humana results.
- Not every carrier returned a quote in every state or at every age. "Lowest" means lowest among the carriers we compared, not every insurer selling Plan G in that state.
How far Humana's Plan G was from the lowest quote — age 65, 45 states
Humana was the lowest-priced Plan G at 65 in Mississippi, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, and West Virginia, and within a dollar of the lowest in Kentucky and Michigan.
But in the median state, Humana was about $38 a month above the cheapest option — roughly $460 a year for the same benefits.
At the far end, Humana was well over $100 a month higher in states like New York, Missouri, Maine, and Oregon.
Example: Delaware, age 65 to 75
A single state shows why comparing only at 65 can mislead you.
| Company | Age 65 | Age 70 | Age 75 |
|---|---|---|---|
| HealthSpring | $184.27Lowest | $192.66Lowest | $213.01Lowest |
| Humana | $202.04 | $233.41 | $299.07 |
| UnitedHealthcare | $208.90 | $229.65 | $281.51 |
| Aetna | $220.41 | $233.91 | $274.81 |
| Blue Cross Blue Shield | $224.40 | — | — |
| Mutual of Omaha | $273.13 | $356.46 | $428.04 |
Monthly Plan G premiums, male, non-tobacco, ZIP 19720, before household discounts. "—" means no quote was returned for that age. Sample quotes are illustrations, not offers of coverage.
At 65, Humana is the second-lowest quote in Delaware, about $18 a month above HealthSpring.
At 75, the gap is about $86 a month, and Humana falls behind UnitedHealthcare and Aetna too.
These quotes show how each insurer currently prices applicants at different ages. They do not predict what your premium will be in five or ten years. Future premiums can change because of age-based pricing, insurer rate adjustments, and other factors.
Still, a carrier whose pricing climbs steeply at older ages today is worth noticing. That's why I always look at a carrier's rates at 70 and 75, not just the quote for your current age.
If Humana is within a few dollars of the lowest quote in your state, it's a reasonable choice. If it's $25 or $50 a month higher for identical coverage, that's $300 to $600 a year for the same benefits.
Humana also offers High-Deductible Plan G in some states. It generally has a lower monthly premium but requires you to pay more Medicare-covered cost-sharing before the policy begins paying. Compare the annual premiums and potential out-of-pocket costs before choosing between the two versions.

Humana Plan G Discounts and Extra Benefits
Humana's discounts can lower the premiums shown above, but the amounts and rules depend on your state and the specific policy series you buy.
| Discount | How it typically works | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Household | A percentage off your premium when you live with a qualifying person. Commonly 5%, and up to 12% in some states and policy series. | Who qualifies. In some states the other person must also have a Humana Medigap policy; in others, living with another adult may be enough. |
| Online application | A percentage off (commonly reported around 6%) for applying online directly with Humana, in many states. | Whether it's offered in your state and whether it applies to the way you're enrolling. |
| Automatic payment | A small monthly credit (commonly about $2) for paying by bank draft or other automatic method. | The exact amount on your quote. |
Sources: a 2026 Humana Medicare Supplement outline of coverage showing a 12% household discount, and NerdWallet's Humana review for the online application discount. Discount terms vary by state and policy, so your outline of coverage is the final word.
Humana's household rules aren't fixed, either.
For applications signed on or after April 23, 2026, Humana changed the household discount in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Nevada, Tennessee, and West Virginia so the other household member must also be enrolled or enrolling in a Humana Medicare Supplement plan. Existing policyholders kept their discount, according to Humana's notice of the change.
That's why I never quote one national discount percentage for any carrier. Always confirm the discount on your actual quote.
Extra benefits
Some Humana Medigap policies include extras such as SilverSneakers fitness access and vision or hearing discounts.
These vary by state and product, and the insurer can change them. They're also not insurance benefits — they don't pay any part of your Medicare bills.
Don't confuse these with Humana's Medicare Advantage benefits. Dental, vision, and hearing allowances you've seen in Humana Advantage ads generally don't come with a Medigap policy.
If fitness access matters to you, see does Humana cover SilverSneakers and confirm it's listed on your specific policy before you apply.
One Thing I'd Watch
I treat extras as a tiebreaker, never a reason to pay more.
If Humana is $5 a month higher and you'll actually use the fitness benefit, that can be a fair trade. If it's $25 a month higher, the extras rarely make up the difference.
Pros and Cons of Humana Plan G
Pros
- AM Best "A" (Excellent) financial strength rating
- Lowest or within $10 of the lowest at 65 in 10 of 45 states we quoted
- Household discount can be generous in some states
- Some policies include fitness and discount extras
- High-Deductible Plan G available in some states
Cons
- More than $50 a month above the lowest quote at 65 in about a third of states we checked
- In some states, the gap to the cheapest carrier widens at older ages
- Discounts and extras vary by state and policy series
- Household rules changed for new applicants in six states in 2026
- A strong rating doesn't guarantee small future rate increases
Humana's strengths are mostly about the company. Its weaknesses are mostly about price in specific states.
Since your coverage is identical either way, price usually deserves the most weight.
How Does Humana Compare With Other Plan G Companies?
Because the benefits match, compare carriers on the factors that actually differ.
| Factor | Why it matters | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Current premium after discounts | The only cost difference you'll feel today | A multi-carrier quote for your ZIP code |
| Rates at older ages | Shows how the carrier prices 70- and 75-year-olds today | Ask for quotes at your age plus 5 and 10 years |
| Rate increase history | Helps you evaluate how premiums have behaved, though past increases can't reliably predict future ones | Your state insurance department's rate filings, or an agent |
| Rating method | Attained-age policies rise as you age; issue-age and community-rated policies work differently | The policy's outline of coverage — see attained age vs. issue age |
| Open or closed block | A closed block can carry more risk of larger increases, though closure doesn't automatically cause them | Ask whether the policy series is still sold to new applicants |
| Financial strength | Ability to pay claims long-term | AM Best rating of the actual underwriting company |
On financial strength, AM Best affirmed an "A" (Excellent) rating for Humana Insurance Company in December 2025. Humana Medigap policies can be issued by different Humana companies depending on your state, so check the underwriting company named on your application and confirm its rating.
Where Humana lands on price depends heavily on your state, which is why a local quote matters more than any national ranking.

A Pattern I've Noticed
Several years ago, Humana was rarely near the top of our Plan G quotes. It's genuinely more competitive now, but only state by state — among the carriers in our comparison, Humana still ranked among the two most expensive options in 20 of the 45 states where it returned a quote.
What about low-priced newer carriers?
Some carriers enter a market with aggressive pricing and later stop selling a policy series to new applicants. ACE (Chubb) closed its Medigap business to new applicants, for example.
A closed block can carry more risk of larger premium increases over time, though it doesn't guarantee them. And switching away may require passing medical underwriting in most states. Read more about why Medigap companies close blocks of business.
That's a reason to check any carrier's history, not a reason to assume every low price is a trap or every large company is safe.
What I See Most Often
- Clients asking whether Humana's Medicare Advantage cutbacks end their Medigap policy. They don't. A Medicare Advantage exit doesn't terminate a separate Medigap policy, though both products can be affected by the company's broader financial decisions.
- Couples who qualify for a household discount and don't realize Humana's version may require both people to be insured by Humana.
- People choosing on brand name alone, then paying more each year for the same Plan G they could have bought for less.
Who Should Consider Humana Plan G?
| If… | Look at… |
|---|---|
| Humana is within a few dollars of the lowest well-rated quote in your ZIP code | Humana — especially if you qualify for its household discount or will use its extras |
| Another strong carrier is $25 or more a month cheaper | The lower-priced carrier, since the coverage is identical |
| You're married and both enrolling | Carriers with strong household discounts, including Humana — confirm who qualifies in your state |
| You're healthy and want a lower premium | High-Deductible Plan G from Humana and others |
| You already have a Humana Medigap policy | Whether a switch is worth it — and whether you can pass underwriting first |
During your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, insurance companies generally can't deny you an available Medigap policy or charge more because of your health history. That makes it the best time to compare carefully.
Outside that period, underwriting depends on your circumstances and state protections, such as a guaranteed issue right. You can apply with Humana online, by phone, or through a licensed agent who can compare it with other carriers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Humana Plan G different from other companies' Plan G?
No, not in its Medicare benefits.
Plan G is standardized in every state except Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Differences between carriers come down to price, discounts, extras, and service.
Is Humana Plan G cheaper than other companies?
Sometimes. In our quotes for a 65-year-old man, Humana was the lowest-priced Plan G among the carriers we compared in 6 of 45 states.
In the median state it was about $38 a month above the cheapest option, so compare quotes in your own ZIP code.
Is Humana a financially strong company?
AM Best affirmed an "A" (Excellent) financial strength rating for Humana Insurance Company in December 2025.
Your policy may be issued by a different Humana company depending on your state, so confirm the underwriting company's rating.
A strong rating speaks to claims-paying ability. It doesn't guarantee small future premium increases.
Does Humana Medicare Supplement include SilverSneakers?
Some Humana Medigap policies do, depending on the state and product.
Check your outline of coverage or ask before you apply.
Will Humana's Medicare Advantage changes affect my Plan G?
A Medicare Advantage market exit doesn't terminate a separate Medigap policy.
Medigap policies are generally guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premium, subject to the policy's terms and limited legal exceptions. Premiums can still change.
My Assessment of Humana Plan G
Humana is a financially strong company selling a standardized product, and in some states it's now the price leader.
In others, it's one of the most expensive options for identical coverage.
My rule: if Humana is within a few dollars of the lowest well-rated quote, it's a solid choice, especially with a household discount. If it's $25 or more higher, I'd usually choose the cheaper carrier. Either way, compare rates at older ages too.
